X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, has introduced major new restrictions for users with free accounts. Under the updated rules, unverified users without a blue checkmark can now make only 50 original posts and 200 replies every 24 hours.

The change marks a massive reduction from the platform’s previous limit, which allowed up to 2,400 posts per day. X has also added more restrictions for free users, including a limit of 500 direct messages and only 400 new follows per day.

According to the company, the new limits are designed to reduce spam, prevent bot activity, and ease pressure on the platform’s systems. X’s engineering team has also divided the limits into smaller time windows, meaning users who post too much within a short period could temporarily lose access even before reaching the daily cap.

When users hit the limit, they receive an automated warning saying their activity appears similar to automated bot behavior. Access is restored after the system reset period ends.

The update has already sparked heavy criticism online. Many users believe the restrictions are designed to push people toward subscribing to X Premium, the platform’s paid membership service. Premium users continue to receive higher posting limits and additional features.

Critics argue that the new rules could hurt journalists, content creators, sports commentators, and highly active users who rely on the platform for real-time discussions and updates. Others say the move changes the identity of X, which was previously promoted as an open platform for free expression.

Since purchasing the company in 2022, Musk has repeatedly described X as a “digital town square” focused on free speech. However, these new restrictions suggest the platform is becoming increasingly focused on monetization and controlling platform activity through paid access.

For casual users, the limits may not make much difference. But for power users and creators who post frequently throughout the day, the changes could significantly affect how they use the platform moving forward.
