Truecaller, widely known for caller identification and spam protection, has launched a new eSIM service aimed at travelers. The move is part of the company’s broader effort to strengthen its finances and reduce reliance on advertising revenue, which has been declining.
The new service offers digital SIM plans that users can activate without a physical SIM card. Plans will range from 1GB for 7 days to 20GB for 30 days, giving users flexible options depending on travel needs. At launch, the service is available across 29 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Canada, Australia, South Africa, and Nigeria.
However, India, Truecaller’s largest market, is not included. This is likely due to strict telecom regulations, which have previously led to restrictions on similar eSIM services in the country.
Truecaller says it is partnering with Telna, a global connectivity provider, and Telness Tech to power the eSIM infrastructure. The company believes its massive user base of over 500 million monthly users gives it a strong advantage compared to competitors like Airalo and Holafly, which had to build their audiences from scratch.
Executives say the integration makes sense because users already trust the app for communication services, making it easier to introduce travel connectivity directly inside the platform. They also suggest that pricing and distribution could be more efficient due to this built-in audience.
The launch comes at a challenging time for the company. Truecaller recently cut 70 jobs and reported weaker financial results, including a 27 percent drop in net sales and a 44 percent decline in advertising revenue. As a result, it is shifting focus toward subscription-based services like AI tools, family protection features, and now eSIM connectivity.
The global eSIM market continues to grow, driven by increased international travel and smartphone compatibility. Investor interest in the space has also risen, with several startups securing major funding over the past year.
