Threads has officially launched messaging support on the web, allowing users to send direct messages and group chats from desktop computers for the first time.
Meta announced the update on Tuesday, saying the new feature helps make the Threads desktop experience more similar to competing social platforms like X and Bluesky.
According to Meta’s Head of Threads, Connor Hayes, web messaging was one of the most requested features after the company first introduced direct messages in July 2025.
The desktop version of Threads now includes a dedicated “Messages” tab where users can open their inbox, view chats, and manage message requests. Users can also search conversations and quickly start new chats directly from the web interface.
Messaging has become an increasingly important part of Threads despite the platform launching in 2023 without direct messages. Meta said users are now sending around 350 million DMs every week, with message activity growing by 30% since the beginning of the year.
Alongside web messaging, Threads has also been introducing more communication-focused features. One of its newest additions is Live Chats, which allow users to join real-time conversations during major cultural events.
The feature is currently launching first within the NBA Threads community during the playoffs. Users in Live Chats can send text messages, photos, videos, links, and emoji reactions. Up to 150 people can actively participate in a chat, while additional users can still watch the conversation and interact through reactions and polls.
The new updates show Meta’s growing focus on turning Threads into a platform centered around conversations and community interaction, not just posts and replies.
