OpenAI has released a new personal finance feature inside ChatGPT that allows users to connect their bank accounts and get detailed insights about their money. The feature is currently available in preview for ChatGPT Pro users in the United States.
The system works through a partnership with Plaid, a secure financial connection service. It supports more than 12,000 banks and financial institutions, including Chase, Fidelity, Robinhood, American Express, Schwab, Capital One, and others. Once connected, users can view a full breakdown of their finances, including spending habits, subscriptions, upcoming bills, and investment performance.

This update comes shortly after OpenAI acquired the team behind the personal finance startup Hiro, which helped strengthen its work in financial tools. While OpenAI has not confirmed how much of the feature was directly built by that team, it says their expertise played a role in development.
Users can activate the feature by selecting the “Finances” option in ChatGPT’s sidebar or by typing a command such as “@Finances, connect my accounts.” After setup, ChatGPT guides users through linking their accounts securely through Plaid. OpenAI also plans to add support for Intuit in the future, which could allow deeper financial insights like tax impact analysis and credit approval estimates.
OpenAI says more than 200 million people already use ChatGPT for financial questions each month. The company also highlighted that its latest model is better at handling complex reasoning, which helps improve accuracy in financial planning and analysis.
With the tool, users can ask questions like whether their spending habits have changed or how to plan savings for major goals like buying a house. ChatGPT then provides personalized breakdowns based on connected account data.
Users can manage privacy settings by disconnecting accounts at any time through the settings menu. Once a connection is removed, the data is deleted from ChatGPT within 30 days. Financial “memories” can also be viewed and erased separately.
OpenAI says the feature reflects a growing trend of AI tools being tailored for specific areas like health, finance, and productivity. Other companies like Anthropic and Perplexity have also launched similar specialized financial tools.
For now, the feature is limited to Pro users on web and iOS, with a wider rollout expected after feedback and improvements.
