The Love Island USA production team has been hit with tragedy following the death of executive producer James Barker, who passed away at 40 after what Peacock and ITV America described as an “unexpected medical emergency” while filming Season 8 in Fiji. His death occurred during active production on one of the most popular reality dating series in streaming television.
In a joint statement shared on Monday, June 15, with NBC News, the companies confirmed that Barker was on set in Fiji when the incident happened. No further details about the cause of death have been released at this time. The producers also announced that he will be honored in the June 16 episode of Love Island USA, which continues its eighth season on Peacock.
Barker had been part of the Love Island USA team since 2020, building a strong behind-the-scenes legacy over the years. He began as a story producer before being promoted to executive producer, a position he held for the past three seasons. In that role, he helped shape the show’s narrative structure, pacing, and overall storytelling direction.
His influence extended beyond editing and story development. Barker also played a major role in production planning and post-production work, including overseeing music selection that helped define the emotional tone of the series. He also contributed to Love Island Games, the franchise’s successful spin-off.
Peacock and ITV America paid tribute to his impact, describing him as a central figure within the production family.
“James’ unimaginable loss has been deeply felt across not just the entire Love Island USA production, but throughout all of ITV and Peacock,” the companies said.
They added further praise in their statement:
“He was a beloved and greatly valued member of our collective family whose kindness, talent, and dedication left an indelible mark on all of us and everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.”
The companies also extended condolences to Barker’s partner, family, friends, and colleagues as they process the loss.
Before rising to prominence on Love Island USA, Barker had already built a strong career in unscripted television. He started at Leftfield Pictures in 2011, working on shows such as Pawn Stars, Counting Cars, and Forged in Fire. He later contributed to major reality and lifestyle programs including Queer Eye, working with production companies like Scout Productions, Sharp Entertainment, and Kinetic Content.
Just days before his passing, Barker had shared an Instagram post celebrating the launch of Season 8. In his message, he reflected on the emotional spirit of the series and the team behind it:
“We come to Fiji for magic. We come to @loveislandusa to laugh, to cry, to care,” he wrote. “Hope you're all enjoying the new season brought to you by a huge squad of brilliant people.”
