Elon Musk has publicly criticized billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott after several viral posts on X praised her record-breaking charitable donations. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO made multiple comments over the course of a day, questioning how Scott has chosen to distribute her wealth and reacting to posts that criticized her philanthropy.

The discussion began after social media account Pubity shared a post highlighting Scott's charitable work. The post noted that the former wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has donated more than $26.3 billion since 2019 and plans to give away most of her fortune to help others and improve communities around the world.

Responding to another X user who criticized Scott's donations, Musk appeared to agree.

After X user Officer Frenly posted, "Unfortunately, she's spending it making the world a worse place," Musk replied, "Sadly, yes."

Later that day, Musk responded to another viral post questioning why Scott had not focused her donations on ending global hunger.

The X account Whole Mars Catalog wrote, "I thought it only cost $6 billion to solve world hunger. Why didn't she do that?"

Musk responded with, "Maybe she didn't feel like it 🤷‍♂️."

Musk also reacted to a meme featuring Jeff Bezos watching his former wife donate billions of dollars to charity. The meme jokingly suggested Bezos was observing Scott give away what had once been part of their shared fortune. Musk replied with a "💯" emoji, signaling his agreement with the post.

The exchange quickly attracted widespread attention, adding another chapter to Musk's history of commenting on public figures and charitable giving through social media.

The criticism comes only weeks after Scott was recognized by TIME magazine on its 2026 TIME100 Philanthropy list. The publication honored her for transforming nonprofit funding through one of the largest individual charitable campaigns in modern history.

According to TIME, Scott has donated roughly $26 billion since 2019 while choosing to stay largely out of the public spotlight. Unlike many major philanthropists, she rarely gives interviews, avoids public appearances, and typically does not request buildings or programs be named after her.

A large portion of Scott's donations has gone toward education.

Earlier this year, she donated $42 million to Elizabeth City State University, bringing her total contributions to historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) to more than $1 billion.

Other institutions that have benefited from her philanthropy include Howard University, Prairie View A&M University, Morgan State University, Norfolk State University, Winston-Salem State University, Bowie State University, Xavier University of Louisiana, Spelman College, Dillard University, Lincoln University, and many others.

Scott has also donated $70 million each to the United Negro College Fund and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, supporting scholarships and educational opportunities for thousands of students.

Her charitable giving extends beyond HBCUs.

Several tribal colleges, including Red Lake Nation College, Bay Mills Community College, Nebraska Indian Community College, and Little Priest Tribal College, have also received multi-million-dollar grants to expand educational programs and improve campus facilities.

Scott has supported a wide range of nonprofit organizations as well. Her recent donations include $70 million to Meals on Wheels America, $50 million to the Native Forward Scholars Fund, hundreds of millions of dollars to Habitat for Humanity, and major funding for climate initiatives, rural colleges, and community-based organizations across the United States.

Throughout her philanthropy, Scott has promoted what she describes as a trust-based approach to giving. Rather than placing strict conditions on how organizations spend donated funds, she allows recipients to decide how the money can best serve their communities.

In an essay published in December 2025, Scott explained her philosophy, writing, "It is these ripple effects that make imagining the power of any of our own acts of kindness impossible."

While Musk's comments have reignited debate over how billionaires should use their wealth, Scott's charitable campaign remains one of the largest and fastest philanthropic efforts ever undertaken by an individual, benefiting thousands of organizations across education, housing, healthcare, and community development.
