Instagram has introduced “Instants,” a new global feature that allows users to share real-time, disappearing photos with close friends or mutual followers. The feature was previously tested with limited users and is now being rolled out worldwide.

The idea behind Instants is to make sharing feel more spontaneous and less curated. Unlike regular Instagram posts, these photos disappear after being viewed once and remain accessible for only 24 hours. The feature takes inspiration from apps like Snapchat, BeReal, and Locket, which all focus on more casual and unfiltered sharing.

To use Instants, users take a photo directly inside Instagram’s camera. Editing is not allowed, and users cannot upload images from their gallery. They can only add simple text before sending. Meta says the goal is to encourage people to share moments as they happen, without polishing or staging them.

Once a photo is sent, it can be viewed only once by recipients. Friends can react with emojis, reply, or send their own Instant back. Instagram also restricts screenshots and screen recording to keep the content temporary, although platform limitations may still apply depending on the device.

Shared Instants are saved in a private archive for up to one year, allowing users to revisit their past posts. From this archive, users can also create a recap and share it as a Story. If someone changes their mind, they can undo a sent Instant before it is opened.

Users who do not want to receive Instants can mute the feature or limit who can send them. Instagram has also added controls to block or restrict specific people.

The rollout reflects Instagram’s shift back toward private, friend-focused sharing, as the platform originally started as a space for personal photo updates before becoming heavily influenced by creators and advertising.
