Instagram is testing a new feature called the “AI creator” label, designed to help users know when content has been created or edited using artificial intelligence.
The label is optional and allows creators to voluntarily identify their accounts as AI-focused profiles. The badge can appear on profile pages, Reels, and regular posts, giving viewers a clearer indication that AI tools were used in the content they are seeing.
This is a more direct approach compared to Instagram’s older “AI info” notices, which only suggested that AI may have been involved in creating the content.
For now, the system depends completely on creators choosing to label themselves, rather than Instagram automatically detecting and marking AI-generated posts across the platform.
The test comes at a time when Meta is facing growing criticism over how it handles AI-generated misinformation and manipulated media online. Concerns increased during the 2025 Israel-Iran conflict, when fake AI-generated videos spread widely across social media and gained millions of views.
Meta’s independent Oversight Board criticized the company’s current moderation tools, saying they are not strong enough to properly detect and limit misleading AI content. The board warned that relying too heavily on voluntary labels and user honesty may not be effective against the rapid spread of deepfakes and fake media.
Experts also raised concerns about something known as the “liar’s dividend,” where people begin doubting all online content because AI-generated media becomes harder to distinguish from reality.
Some reviewers are now calling for stricter rules and dedicated policies for AI-generated content, including automatic detection systems and stronger labeling standards that do not rely only on creators choosing to participate.
While many see Instagram’s new AI creator label as a positive step toward transparency, critics argue that optional labels alone may not be enough to stop harmful misinformation from spreading online.
