Google is continuing its push into artificial intelligence with a major new Gmail upgrade revealed during its I/O 2026 developer conference. The company introduced “Gmail Live,” a new AI-powered feature that allows users to interact with their inbox using natural speech instead of traditional keyword searches.

Powered by Google’s Gemini AI model, Gmail Live is designed to help users quickly locate important information buried inside emails. Instead of typing specific words into the search bar, users can simply ask questions out loud, such as details about a flight, hotel reservation, school event, Airbnb code, or upcoming appointment.

Google says the feature can understand conversational language, respond to follow-up questions, and even switch topics smoothly during a conversation. During a demonstration, the AI was able to pull detailed information from emails, including hotel room numbers and travel plans, while also understanding context between different conversations and events.

The company explained that Gmail Live is meant to solve one of the most frustrating parts of email: finding old or hidden information across hundreds or thousands of messages. Traditional Gmail search will still remain available, but the new AI option adds a more interactive and personalized experience.

Google also revealed that similar voice-powered AI technology will expand into other services, including Google Keep, where users will be able to manage notes and to-do lists through conversation.

Alongside Gmail Live, Gmail is receiving several other AI upgrades. These include ready-to-send draft suggestions, faster file access, and smarter task management features that allow users to mark tasks as completed directly from the inbox experience.

The broader “AI Inbox” system, which gives users AI-generated summaries and overviews of important emails, will also expand beyond Google AI Ultra subscribers to users on Google AI Pro and Plus plans.

Google says Gmail Live will begin rolling out later this summer, though the voice-powered feature will initially only be available to Google AI Ultra subscribers.
