DoorDash has introduced a new AI-powered chatbot that allows users to order food and groceries using simple text prompts, everyday language, and even photos. The feature is part of the company’s broader push to make the app feel more intelligent and easier to use, especially when users are not sure exactly what they want.

The chatbot, called “Ask DoorDash,” removes the need to manually scroll through restaurants, stores, or grocery categories. Instead, users can describe what they’re in the mood for in their own words. They can also paste recipe links, upload images of meals or grocery lists, or describe a dining experience they want, and the system will generate relevant suggestions.

DoorDash explains that traditional search works best when users already know what they are looking for. The new tool is designed for the opposite situation, when users are unsure and need inspiration or guidance. The AI is built to understand intent rather than exact keywords, which makes the ordering process more conversational and flexible.

One of the key features is its ability to turn images into shopping lists. For example, a user can take a photo of a handwritten grocery list or a cookbook page, and the chatbot will automatically identify the items, add them to a cart, and assign the correct quantities. It can also prompt users to confirm essentials they may already have at home to avoid duplicate purchases.

The chatbot can also learn from user behavior. It can reorder previous grocery carts or suggest new items based on past purchases, helping to streamline repeat shopping. This makes it easier for frequent users to quickly restock items without starting from scratch each time.

For restaurant orders, users can make open-ended requests like asking for a filling dinner for a family of four. The app will then recommend restaurants along with explanations for why they match the request. Users can further refine results with more specific instructions, such as dietary needs, budget limits, or preferences like vegetarian or kid-friendly meals.

DoorDash has also added a reservations feature within the same system. Users can ask for something like a table for two around 8 PM for a date night, and the chatbot will show available restaurants. It can then narrow results further based on atmosphere or preference until the user finds the right option.

The feature is currently rolling out on iOS in selected regions for food delivery, grocery shopping, and reservations, with a wider rollout across the United States expected in the coming weeks.
