Sony has officially announced that it will end production of physical discs for all new PlayStation games beginning in January 2028, signaling one of the biggest changes in the company's gaming history.

From that point onward, every newly released PlayStation game will be available only in digital format, with players purchasing and downloading titles through the PlayStation Store or other approved digital retailers.

Games released before the 2028 cutoff will continue to be sold on physical discs, meaning existing collections and previously launched titles will still be supported.

The decision marks the end of an era for millions of PlayStation fans who have collected physical games for decades. Disc-based games have long been a key part of gaming culture, offering players something tangible to own, display, trade, or resell.

However, Sony says consumer habits have changed dramatically over the years, with the overwhelming majority of players now choosing digital downloads over physical copies.

In its announcement, the company explained:

"This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today."

According to Sony's financial results for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2025, 85% of all full-game sales on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 were digital downloads, while only 15% were purchased on physical discs.

The growing popularity of digital gaming has also had a major impact on video game retailers.

Stores that once relied heavily on selling physical games have seen business decline as more customers purchase games online. GameStop, one of the world's largest video game retailers, has reportedly closed more than 1,300 stores over the past two fiscal years as the industry continues moving toward digital distribution.

Sony's announcement comes shortly after another controversy surrounding physical game releases.

Fans of Grand Theft Auto VI recently expressed disappointment after learning that the game's so-called "physical edition" would include only a download code inside the box instead of an actual game disc. The reaction highlighted that many gamers still value collecting physical copies, even if they primarily play digitally.

Alongside the move away from physical media, Sony also announced plans to gradually retire older PlayStation digital storefronts.

Later this year, the company will begin shutting down the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 3 in selected regions. The closure will expand globally next year, when both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita digital stores will officially close worldwide.

Once those stores shut down, players will no longer be able to purchase new games or digital content for those platforms.

Sony confirmed, however, that users who have already bought games digitally will still be able to download their previous purchases for the foreseeable future, ensuring that existing libraries remain accessible.

The announcement reflects the gaming industry's continued shift toward an all-digital future, even as many players continue to value the experience of owning physical game collections. As 2028 approaches, Sony's decision is expected to reshape how PlayStation games are sold and collected for years to come.
