A dramatic real-world museum robbery that shocked France and the global art community is now being turned into a feature film.

French director Romain Gavras, known for high-energy projects like Athena and visually striking music videos for artists such as JAY-Z, has been tapped to direct a movie based on the October 2025 Louvre Museum heist. The film will be inspired by a newly released investigative book that breaks down one of the most daring art crimes in recent memory.

The robbery involved the theft of more than $100 million worth of French crown jewels from the Louvre’s Apollo Gallery. What made the case even more shocking was how it unfolded in broad daylight, inside one of the world’s most secure and visited museums.

According to reports, the thieves posed as maintenance workers to gain access, using a stolen lift and coordinated planning to breach security systems. The operation exposed major vulnerabilities at the museum and led to the resignation of its then-director, Laurence des Cars.

Despite arrests of several suspects shortly after the incident, the stolen jewels have not been recovered. Months later, the case remains unsolved, with investigators still piecing together how the operation was carried out and where the missing treasures ended up.

The film will be based on the investigative book Main basse sur le Louvre, written by journalists from Le Parisien, Le Monde, and Paris Match. The project has already attracted strong industry interest, with production rights secured even before the book officially reached shelves.

A separate documentary adaptation is also reportedly in development, reflecting the global fascination with the case.

Industry observers expect Gavras to bring his signature fast-paced and visually intense style to the story, potentially turning it into a major true-crime thriller. While casting and release details have not been announced, the project is already being viewed as one of the most anticipated upcoming crime films.
