The Super Mario Galaxy movie is quickly becoming one of the biggest animated films in recent years. Just weeks after its release, the film has already earned more than $942 million worldwide, putting it very close to reaching the $1 billion box office milestone.
According to recent box office reports, the movie has made around $413 million in the United States and about $528 million internationally. With a production budget reportedly close to $110 million, the film has already earned more than eight times what it cost to make.
The movie had a huge opening weekend, bringing in about $131.7 million and staying near the top of global box office rankings throughout April. Its strong performance continues Nintendo’s successful partnership with Universal following the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023.
Unlike the previous film, Super Mario Galaxy expanded beyond the Mushroom Kingdom and introduced more characters from Nintendo’s wider universe. Fan favorites such as Rosalina, Bowser Jr., Yoshi, and Fox McCloud appeared in the movie, leading many fans online to compare the crossover style to Super Smash Bros..
While critics gave mixed reactions to the story, many praised the movie’s animation, visuals, and attention to Nintendo fan culture. Audiences especially enjoyed the large number of references to games like Mario Kart, Pikmin, Star Fox, and locations from the Super Mario Galaxy games.
The movie’s success further strengthens Nintendo’s growing presence in film and entertainment, showing how powerful its gaming franchises have become outside the video game industry.
