Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has agreed to a new contract extension worth $35 million over two years. The deal keeps him with the franchise through the 2025-26 NBA season.
With an average salary of $17.5 million per year, Kerr is now officially the highest-paid coach in NBA history on a yearly basis. Although coaches like Erik Spoelstra and Gregg Popovich have signed larger total contracts, Kerr now holds the record for the highest annual coaching salary.
The extension came after long negotiations between Kerr’s representatives and Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. The team also aligned the contract timeline with Stephen Curry’s current deal, showing its focus on continuing to compete for championships during Curry’s remaining prime years.
Since becoming head coach in 2014, Kerr has helped turn the Warriors into one of the NBA’s greatest modern dynasties. Under his leadership, the team has won four NBA championships and became one of the league’s most dominant franchises.
Kerr recently reached another major milestone by earning his 500th career coaching win. He achieved the feat in only 764 games, making him the fifth-fastest coach in NBA history to reach that mark.
Warriors owner Joe Lacob praised Kerr’s leadership, experience, and ability to manage the team both on and off the court. Moving forward, Kerr will continue leading a roster that combines veteran stars with younger developing players.
Before returning to the NBA season, Kerr is also set to coach the United States men’s basketball team at the upcoming Paris Olympics.
