Lionsgate has officially confirmed during its latest earnings call that Michael 2 is happening, and development is already much further along than previously known. According to Motion Picture Chair Adam Fogelson, around 25 to 30 percent of the sequel has already been filmed using footage captured during the production of the first movie.
The original Michael film has been a major box office success, earning over $704 million worldwide and moving closer to the $1 billion mark. Its strong performance has pushed the studio to continue expanding the story sooner than expected.
CEO Jon Feltheimer said the studio believes there is “a lot more story to tell and a lot more music to share,” signaling confidence in the franchise’s future rather than uncertainty about its direction.
Fogelson explained that the already-filmed footage gives the sequel a major advantage, reducing both production time and cost. He also noted that the story can now explore both earlier and later parts of Michael Jackson’s life that were not fully covered in the first film.
He added that key moments and major songs from Jackson’s catalog were not included in the first movie, leaving strong material available for the sequel to build on.
With a large portion already completed and a wealth of untapped material, Michael 2 is shaping up to expand the story in a much broader way than the original.
