Keanu Reeves is reportedly in negotiations to headline a new LEGO film being developed by Universal Pictures, with Toy Story 4 director Josh Cooley attached to direct. The film is planned as a hybrid of live-action and animation, marking a major shift from the fully animated LEGO movies previously released by Warner Bros. Reeves would reunite with Cooley, who previously directed him as Duke Kaboom, adding an early creative connection to the project.
This new direction signals a rethinking of how the LEGO universe is being adapted for film. While earlier entries like The LEGO Movie built their entire worlds through animation, this version is expected to combine real actors with animated LEGO environments. The approach suggests Universal is not simply continuing the old franchise style but instead rebuilding it with a new visual identity that blends physical performance and digital construction in the same space.
Behind the scenes, the development process has also taken an unusual path. Reports suggest Universal spent several years cycling through different writers and directors before landing on a workable concept. Instead of starting with a completed script and then attaching talent, the studio reportedly built the project around a character designed for Reeves, bringing him into early discussions before Cooley officially came on board. This reversed approach highlights how central Reeves’ involvement has become in shaping the film’s direction.
The urgency around the project is also tied to business pressure. Universal currently holds the LEGO film rights, but insiders indicate that the studio must move the project close to pre-production within a limited timeframe or risk losing those rights. That deadline has added momentum to development, making Reeves’ involvement even more important as it gives the studio a strong anchor to move the film forward.
Production is being handled by Jill Wilfert and Ryan Christians through The LEGO Group, with plot details still kept under wraps. For now, the film remains in the negotiation stage, with casting, story, and release plans expected to be revealed as the project progresses toward full production at Universal Pictures.
