Mel Gibson has officially revealed the first look at The Resurrection of the Christ, the long-awaited follow-up to his 2004 biblical epic The Passion of the Christ. Alongside the reveal, updated release dates confirm that the project will now be released as two films arriving in 2027 and 2028.
Part One, which was originally scheduled for March 2027, is now set to release on May 6, 2027. Part Two has also been delayed and will now arrive on May 25, 2028. Gibson confirmed that filming has been completed and says the final result matches his original vision.
The first film, The Passion of the Christ, became a massive global success, earning over $600 million worldwide on a relatively small budget. It also held the record as the highest-grossing R-rated film in the U.S. for two decades before being surpassed in 2024.
The sequel picks up directly after the events of the original film. Production took place over more than four months across several locations in Italy, including Rome, Matera, and Bari, and wrapped ahead of schedule for a project of this scale.
Jaakko Ohtonen will play Jesus in the new films, while Mariela Garriga stars as Mary Magdalene. The original cast, including Jim Caviezel and Monica Bellucci, does not return. The supporting cast includes Rupert Everett, Riccardo Scamarcio, Kasia Smutniak, and Pier Luigi Pasino.
Gibson has described the screenplay as unlike anything he has read before, suggesting a more intense and unconventional tone compared to the original film. He has also said the project is deeply personal, calling it the most important story he has ever worked on.
Despite the long development timeline, the project is now fully completed in production, with audiences set to experience the story in two parts over the next few years.
