Willow Smith has opened up about how her father, actor Will Smith, has made career decisions based not only on the role itself, but also on how it could affect his life at home.
During a recent appearance on Kid Cudi’s Big Bro podcast, Willow and Cudi were discussing the emotional demands that can come with acting when the conversation turned to the Academy Award-winning actor.
Willow explained that her father has previously rejected certain roles because he believed the emotional weight of the characters could follow him home and affect the atmosphere around his family.
"My dad has specifically said no to certain roles because he felt like the energy was too heavy to be bringing into the house," Willow revealed around the 55-minute mark of the video below. "Like, 'Nah, I'm not even gonna touch that because I don't want to be coming home to my family in this.'"
The 25-year-old explained that taking on emotionally demanding characters can require an actor to go deeply into the character's mindset, particularly when the performance depends on fully connecting with the emotions being portrayed.
"That's a deep one. You really have to embody it if you're doing it right," the 25-year-old added.
Willow’s comments echo something her father previously discussed in his 2021 memoir, Will. In the book, Smith reflected on one of his earliest major dramatic roles, playing Paul in the 1993 film Six Degrees of Separation.
Smith described the experience as particularly demanding because he used method acting techniques while preparing for the role. The emotional intensity of the character eventually became difficult to separate from his personal life.
At the time, Smith was married to Sheree Zampino. The couple divorced in 1995 after three years of marriage, and Smith went on to marry Jada Pinkett Smith in 1997.
His experience with emotionally intense performances appears to have remained part of how he approached certain projects throughout his career. Rather than accepting every major opportunity, Smith has occasionally walked away from roles that did not feel right for him.
Some of the most notable examples include Django Unchained, The Matrix and Inception, all of which went on to become major successes after Smith declined their lead roles.
Smith’s decision to pass on Django Unchained was particularly notable. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor did not take the role because he viewed the story as being centered on revenge.
Years later, however, Smith took on another emotionally difficult historical role in Emancipation, released in 2022. He played Peter, an enslaved man who escapes from a Louisiana plantation and fights for his freedom.
The decision-making process Willow described highlights another side of an actor’s career that audiences do not always see. While major roles can offer professional opportunities and recognition, they can also require performers to spend months living inside difficult emotional worlds.
For Smith, Willow suggests that the potential effect of a role on his family has sometimes been part of that calculation. His choice to turn down certain projects was not necessarily about the size or importance of the opportunity, but about what he believed he would carry with him after the cameras stopped rolling.
Willow’s comments also offer a glimpse into how an actor’s professional work can affect the people closest to them, especially when the performance requires intense emotional commitment.
