The Metropolitan Museum of Art has officially announced that legendary fashion designer John Galliano will be the focus of its Spring 2027 Costume Institute exhibition, making him the centerpiece of the 2027 Met Gala.
Titled John Galliano: Horizons, the exhibition will be the first major museum retrospective to explore the full scope of Galliano's remarkable four-decade career in fashion. The exhibition will be open to the public at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York from May 9, 2027, through January 9, 2028.
The announcement marks another historic milestone for Galliano. He becomes only the third living designer to receive a solo exhibition at The Met, joining Yves Saint Laurent, who was honored in 1983, and Rei Kawakubo, whose groundbreaking exhibition was held in 2017.
Curated by Andrew Bolton, the Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute, the exhibition will trace Galliano's journey from his graduation collection at Central Saint Martins in 1984 to his influential work at some of the world's biggest fashion houses, including Givenchy, Christian Dior, and Maison Margiela.
Visitors will have the opportunity to see a wide range of materials from throughout Galliano's career. The exhibition will feature iconic garments, accessories, original sketches, design research books, fabric prototypes, and other creative materials that reveal how his collections came to life. The retrospective will conclude with his widely praised Maison Margiela Artisanal Spring/Summer 2024 collection, which many fashion critics consider one of the strongest moments of his career.
The exhibition will be divided into three major sections: "Bearings," "Horizons," and "Atlas of Transformation." Each section is designed to explore a different chapter of Galliano's creative evolution, showcasing both his innovative approach to fashion design and the lasting impact he has had on the industry.
The opening section, "Bearings," will also address one of the most controversial periods of Galliano's life. According to The Met, it will examine his behavior in 2010 and 2011, the events that led to his dismissal from Christian Dior, and the broader conversation surrounding accountability, redemption, and artistic legacy. By including this chapter alongside his creative achievements, the exhibition aims to present a complete and balanced look at the designer's career.
Beyond celebrating Galliano's extraordinary craftsmanship and theatrical vision, John Galliano: Horizons will also serve as the inspiration for the 2027 Met Gala, one of fashion's biggest annual events. Every year, the gala's dress code is based on the Costume Institute's spring exhibition, making Galliano's work the central influence on what celebrities and designers will wear on fashion's biggest night.
With its combination of iconic fashion pieces, behind-the-scenes creative materials, and thoughtful exploration of Galliano's legacy, the exhibition is expected to become one of the Costume Institute's most anticipated shows in recent years, offering visitors an in-depth look at one of the most influential and innovative designers of modern fashion.
