The Transformers franchise could be heading back toward the creative team that helped turn it into a global blockbuster, with Steven Spielberg attached to produce the next movie and Michael Bay reportedly in discussions to direct.
‍

According to Deadline, Paramount Pictures and Hasbro are developing another live-action installment of the franchise. The movie is currently untitled and has not been formally announced, but Spielberg is reportedly involved as a creative producer alongside longtime franchise producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura.

‍

Bay, meanwhile, is reportedly in talks to return behind the camera. If the deal comes together, it would mark his first time directing a Transformers movie since 2017’s Transformers: The Last Knight.

‍

The potential return is significant because Bay was the filmmaker who established the visual style of the live-action series when the first Transformers movie arrived in 2007.

‍

That film introduced audiences to a modern cinematic version of the Autobots and Decepticons while placing the alien robots alongside a human cast led by Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox and Tyrese Gibson.

‍

The 2007 movie became a major commercial success and quickly turned Transformers into one of Paramount’s most recognizable modern franchises. Its combination of large-scale action, computer-generated robots and military spectacle became a defining feature of the series.

‍

Bay went on to direct the first five live-action movies. He returned for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen in 2009, Transformers: Dark of the Moon in 2011, Transformers: Age of Extinction in 2014 and Transformers: The Last Knight in 2017.

‍

LaBeouf and Fox returned for the second film, although Fox did not appear in the third installment. The franchise then underwent another major cast change with Transformers: Age of Extinction, which moved the focus to Mark Wahlberg as the human lead.

‍

By the time The Last Knight arrived, the series had expanded considerably in scale and mythology, but Bay eventually stepped away from directing duties.

‍

The franchise continued without him with Bumblebee in 2018. Directed by Travis Knight, the film took a more character-focused approach and centered on the relationship between the Autobot Bumblebee and a teenage girl played by Hailee Steinfeld.

‍

That was followed by Transformers: Rise of the Beasts in 2023, which expanded the mythology further by introducing the Maximals and connecting the story to a wider collection of Transformers characters.

‍

Neither of those films was directed by Bay, making his reported discussions for the new project particularly notable. A return would bring back the director most closely associated with the franchise's first era.

‍

Spielberg also has a long history with the series. He served as an executive producer on the earlier Transformers movies and had a creative role during the development of Bay's first two films.

‍

His involvement in the new project could therefore give the upcoming installment a connection to the franchise's original creative foundation while the series attempts to establish its next direction.

‍

It remains unclear whether the new movie will continue the storylines from the most recent films or introduce another major reset. Details about the plot are currently limited, and there is no confirmation yet about which human characters could return.

‍

The classic Transformers themselves are expected to remain central to the franchise, with the Autobots and Decepticons providing the core mythology that has carried the series across multiple generations.

‍

However, one familiar voice will not be returning. Peter Cullen, who became synonymous with Optimus Prime through decades of performances, died in 2026, meaning the character will require a new voice if Optimus appears in the upcoming film.

‍

The next movie is currently being developed from a screenplay by Jason Fuchs. Fuchs is known for his work on projects including Wonder Woman, and his involvement adds another established Hollywood writer to the latest chapter of the franchise.

‍

The potential reunion of Spielberg and Bay also comes at a time when both filmmakers' connections to Transformers remain part of the franchise's wider legacy.

‍

Bay recently reflected on how the original movies affected the careers of himself and LaBeouf. In one memorable anecdote, he recalled that LaBeouf “cried twice” after experiencing the Transformers ride at Universal Studios.

‍

The franchise has also continued to receive recognition from other major actors. Robert Pattinson recently described Transformers as “the definitive movie of the 2000s,” highlighting the cultural impact the original films had on audiences who grew up during that period.

‍

For Paramount and Hasbro, bringing Bay back could also represent an attempt to reconnect the franchise with the filmmaking style that helped establish its identity at the box office.

‍

At the same time, the series has demonstrated that it can explore different tones and characters beyond the original Bay era. Bumblebee and Rise of the Beasts expanded the universe in different directions, leaving open the possibility that the next film could combine elements of the newer movies with the larger-scale approach associated with Bay.

‍

There is currently no confirmed release date, finalized cast or official title for the new installment. Bay's involvement also remains in the negotiation stage, so his return should not yet be treated as confirmed.

‍

If the deal is completed, however, the project would bring together Spielberg, Bay, Hasbro and Paramount for another major attempt to push the Transformers franchise into its next cinematic era.

‍

After nearly two decades of live-action movies, multiple casts and several different approaches to the mythology, the potential return of the franchise's original creative powerhouses could make the next Transformers movie one of its most closely watched installments yet.
