Spider-Man: Brand New Day is reportedly heading back to theaters with new footage, giving fans another chance to see the Marvel blockbuster on the big screen.
Variety has confirmed that a theatrical re-release is in the works, although the studio has not revealed exactly what the additional footage will contain or when the updated version will arrive in cinemas.
The move comes after Brand New Day became one of the biggest theatrical successes of the year. The film, which opened on July 31, has continued to attract audiences and has already reached several major box-office milestones.
The movie has earned $2.49 billion at the domestic box office, placing it among the highest-grossing films ever released in the United States. It currently trails Avatar and Avengers: Endgame while sitting ahead of Avatar: The Way of Water and Titanic.
One of its biggest achievements came on September 16, when Brand New Day surpassed Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the highest-grossing domestic film of all time.
The Force Awakens had held that record since 2015, with $936 million in North American ticket sales. Brand New Day passed the mark after collecting $936.773 million in just 47 days.
The film is now approaching another major milestone that has never been reached by a movie at the domestic box office: $1 billion in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales.
As of September 28, Brand New Day had reached approximately $950.6 million in North America, leaving it around $50 million short of the historic figure.
That gap gives the planned re-release particular significance. By adding previously unseen footage and returning the movie to theaters, Sony and Marvel could give the film another opportunity to generate ticket sales and move closer to the $1 billion mark.
The studios have not revealed what scenes will be included in the expanded version. However, the new material could potentially bring back moments that were removed from the original theatrical cut.
One possibility is previously deleted footage involving Rosario Dawson, who reportedly filmed scenes as Claire Temple that did not make it into the released movie. It remains unclear whether those scenes will be part of the re-release.
Whatever is added, the updated cut is expected to give audiences material they did not see when the film originally opened.
Brand New Day stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker, who is dealing with life after a spell caused the people closest to him to forget his identity. The story follows Peter as he continues operating as Spider-Man while trying to navigate a world in which he has become increasingly isolated.
The cast also includes Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Jacob Batalon, Mark Ruffalo, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando and Florence Pugh.
Destin Daniel Cretton directed the film from a screenplay by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. Kevin Feige, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad and Rachel O'Connor produced the movie, with Louis D'Esposito and David Cain serving as executive producers.
The potential return to theaters comes as the film continues its record-setting run. A re-release with fresh material could attract both existing fans who want to experience the movie again and viewers interested in seeing the previously unreleased scenes.
For Sony and Marvel, the timing also creates an opportunity to extend the movie's theatrical life rather than relying entirely on its original run.
An official release date for the re-release has not yet been announced, and details about the new footage remain under wraps. For now, Brand New Day continues its push toward the $1 billion domestic milestone, with the expanded theatrical version potentially giving Spider-Man another shot at reaching the historic mark.
