A new Planet of the Apes movie is officially in development at 20th Century Studios, with director Matt Shakman attached to lead the project. Shakman is best known for directing Marvel’s Fantastic Four: First Steps and the hit series WandaVision. He will work alongside screenwriter Josh Friedman, who also worked on Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, the most recent film in the franchise. That movie earned nearly $400 million globally, continuing the long-running success of the series.
The upcoming film will continue the story of intelligent apes challenging humanity, but the studio has not revealed any plot details yet. Shakman will also serve as a producer, along with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, while Scott Aversano oversees the project for the studio.
Over the past 15 years, the modern Planet of the Apes films have earned more than $2 billion at the global box office. The franchise remains one of Hollywood’s most successful sci-fi series.
Shakman brings a strong track record in both film and television, having directed projects like Succession, Game of Thrones, and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, among others.
