Meta is expanding its artificial intelligence push inside WhatsApp with the global launch of its new Meta Business Agent. The tool is designed to help businesses handle customer conversations more efficiently while turning WhatsApp into a more complete business management platform, especially for small and medium-sized companies that rely heavily on messaging for sales and support.

The AI system has already been tested for nearly two years in markets like India and Mexico, where it was used for customer service automation. Following those trials, Meta is now rolling it out globally across WhatsApp Business and also integrating it into Instagram direct messages, allowing businesses to manage customer interactions across both platforms from a single AI-powered system.

The Meta Business Agent is built to take over a wide range of routine tasks. It can respond to customer questions in real time, recommend products based on user queries, assist with booking appointments, and help identify and qualify potential sales leads. If the AI reaches a point where it cannot resolve an issue, it automatically transfers the conversation to a human representative to ensure customers still receive personalized support when needed.

Beyond basic automation, Meta is also testing more advanced features aimed at improving business intelligence. These include daily summaries of customer conversations that happened overnight, giving businesses quick insight into missed messages, ongoing inquiries, and urgent issues without having to manually review chats.

The company is also developing tools that allow the AI to go further into operational support. These experimental features include assisting with market research, analyzing product performance, managing calendars, and connecting with third-party business tools to extract competitive insights. This would position the AI not just as a chatbot, but as a broader digital assistant for day-to-day business operations.

Meta is also working on deeper integration inside its ecosystem. The AI agent could eventually surface businesses automatically when users search or share contacts, making discovery more seamless. For larger companies, Meta is building a system that allows them to design custom AI agents that connect with platforms like Shopify, Zendesk, and Shopee, enabling more advanced automation across customer service, sales, and logistics workflows.

Monetization is also part of the rollout strategy. Meta plans to include the AI agent in certain WhatsApp Business Premium subscription tiers, while larger enterprises will be charged based on usage, including the number of AI tokens consumed during interactions. This usage-based model allows Meta to scale pricing depending on business size and activity level.

This development is significant for WhatsApp’s long-term strategy. The platform has traditionally generated revenue through business messaging fees and click-to-WhatsApp ads, but the introduction of AI tools creates a new revenue stream while shifting WhatsApp closer to a full business software ecosystem.

Meta is also continuing to expand its AI features across its apps, positioning WhatsApp and Instagram as key hubs for automated business communication. With global rollout now underway, the company is betting that AI-driven messaging will become a central part of how businesses interact with customers in the coming years.
