Meta is reportedly working on a new pair of smart glasses that could take a different approach from its existing camera-equipped models. The glasses, reportedly known internally as Luna, would remove the built-in cameras while keeping features designed around Meta’s artificial intelligence technology.

‍

According to The Information, Luna would allow users to communicate with Meta’s AI chatbot and Muse, the company’s AI consumer agent, without relying on cameras. Instead, the glasses would use six built-in microphones to pick up the user’s voice and send commands to the AI system.

‍

The glasses would also feature a physical button on the side. Pressing the button would activate the AI system, allowing users to interact with Meta’s assistant through voice commands. This would give the device a way to provide AI-powered functions without constantly relying on visual information captured through cameras.

‍

The reported camera-free design could also help Meta respond to one of the biggest concerns surrounding smart glasses: privacy. Meta’s existing glasses have attracted significant attention because they can capture photos and videos from the wearer’s point of view, leading some people to question whether they could be used inappropriately in public spaces.

‍

That concern has become more prominent as smart glasses have become increasingly common. While Meta’s camera-equipped models have gained more traction than several competing products, their ability to record the surrounding environment has also created discomfort among some consumers who view the technology as intrusive.

‍

Luna could therefore give Meta a way to offer its AI-powered glasses experience without making visual recording a central part of the product. Removing the cameras would also create a clearer distinction between the new model and Meta’s existing smart glasses, which combine hands-free computing with photography and video capabilities.

‍

The Information reports that Meta could unveil Luna as soon as Meta Connect, the company’s annual hardware and developer event taking place in Menlo Park next week. However, Meta has not publicly confirmed the product or announced an official launch date.

‍

Meta has been one of the most prominent companies in the growing smart glasses market, with its Reality Labs division overseeing much of the company’s work in augmented and wearable technology. The broader smart glasses industry has expanded in recent years as companies explore ways to bring voice assistants, artificial intelligence and other digital features into everyday eyewear.

‍

Despite that growth, smart glasses still face questions around price, usefulness and privacy. Many consumers remain uncertain about what they would use the devices for on a daily basis, particularly when compared with smartphones and other established forms of technology.

‍

Meta’s investment in the category has also come with significant financial costs. Reality Labs, the division responsible for much of Meta’s virtual, augmented and wearable technology development, has continued to report substantial losses, making the success of new hardware products increasingly important to the company’s broader strategy.

‍

If Luna is unveiled, its camera-free approach could show that Meta is exploring a different direction for smart glasses, focusing more heavily on voice-based AI assistance while reducing one of the features that has generated the most privacy concerns around wearable cameras.
