Mercedes-Benz AMG has unveiled a one-of-one G63 AMG created as a tribute to the late Virgil Abloh, whose work reshaped how fashion, architecture, and industrial design can overlap. The project serves as a continuation of his influence on automotive design, especially his 2020 “Project Geländewagen,” which reimagined what a luxury SUV could look like when treated as a piece of art rather than just transportation.

The most striking feature of the vehicle is its exterior, which appears unfinished at first glance. The body panels look sanded, raw, and partially assembled, almost like a prototype that has not yet reached final production. In reality, this effect is carefully engineered through a highly detailed paint process developed by Mercedes-Benz AMG artisans. Every visual imperfection is intentional, translating Abloh’s well-known “work-in-progress” concept into a fully completed and polished factory build.

Instead of aiming for a traditional luxury finish, the design leans into industrial minimalism and exposed structure. The result is a visual contradiction: a vehicle that looks incomplete but is actually one of the most carefully crafted custom builds Mercedes has ever produced. It reflects Abloh’s philosophy of questioning what “finished” design should look like and turning that idea into something tangible.

Unlike the original “Project Geländewagen,” which was created as a stripped-down concept piece focused purely on artistic expression, this version is fully drivable and built for real-world use. It has been adapted for city driving, particularly in Chicago, a city deeply connected to Abloh’s upbringing and early creative development. That setting adds meaning to the project, grounding it in the environment that helped shape his vision.

Inside, the vehicle maintains a restrained and modern approach, focusing on material quality and subtle detailing rather than flashy decoration. The cabin reflects the same design language seen on the exterior, balancing utility with artistic intent. Every element reinforces the idea that the vehicle is both functional machinery and a moving sculpture.

The G63 AMG tribute is not intended for sale and will remain a one-of-one creation. It exists as a permanent homage within Abloh’s legacy, reinforcing his long-standing relationship with Mercedes-Benz and his impact on how car design can be interpreted through a cultural and artistic lens.
