Jaguar has officially unveiled the production version of its Type 01, introducing a high-performance electric luxury sedan that marks one of the biggest changes in the company's modern history. The vehicle made its world premiere at STORIED in New York's creative district, where Jaguar used a digital skyline takeover and a dramatic arrival through the city's streets to present the production model to the public.

‍

‍

The Type 01, pronounced “Type Zero One” rather than “Type Oh One,” carries a starting price of roughly $130,500 in the United States. The 5,950-pound sedan arrives more than a year later than originally expected after development and launch plans were affected by a major cyberattack as well as changing conditions across the electric vehicle market.

‍

Its arrival is particularly important because Jaguar is using the Type 01 to continue a major transformation of its brand identity. The company began that shift with the controversial Type 00 concept revealed in Miami two years ago, moving away from many of the traditional design elements that had long been associated with Jaguar.

‍

Rather than evolving its existing models gradually, Jaguar has chosen a much more dramatic approach. The Type 01 is designed to appeal to a different generation of luxury buyers while establishing a visual language that is intended to define the company's next era of electric vehicles.

‍

‍

That strategy is immediately visible in the sedan's proportions. The Type 01 measures 206.1 inches long, making it only 2.7 inches shorter than a Mercedes-Benz S-Class. However, its roof sits about four inches lower, giving the Jaguar a much more dramatic and aggressive stance.

‍

The front end is another major departure from traditional Jaguar design. There is no conventional grille, with the vehicle instead drawing air through active shutters positioned lower in the front fascia. This gives the sedan a much cleaner appearance while allowing the aerodynamic system to manage airflow when cooling is required.

‍

The side profile features another unusual design element around the C-pillar. Three creases converge in the area, while a deep section running from the fender toward the roof creates what Jaguar calls the “impossible panel.”

‍

‍

Producing that section requires six separate stamping steps using a massive 2,500-ton press. The complexity of the panel reflects how much emphasis Jaguar has placed on making the Type 01 look unlike conventional luxury sedans.

‍

At the rear, the Type 01 takes the design even further with a fastback-style shape that does not use a traditional rear window. Instead, drivers rely on a rearview camera display positioned just above their normal line of sight.

‍

U.S. regulations mean Jaguar still has to include a conventional reflective mirror, however. As a result, North American versions will feature a small traditional rearview mirror mounted at the top of the windshield despite the camera-based system.

‍

Jaguar is also moving away from some of the familiar color choices associated with its older vehicles. The standard palette includes white, silver, grey, black, two greyish-blue finishes and a color called “Mermerizing Copper.”

‍

Notably absent is British Racing Green, one of the colors most strongly associated with Jaguar's heritage. The company is instead using the new palette to reinforce the Type 01's position as part of its redesigned visual identity.

‍

For buyers looking for something even more exclusive, Jaguar is offering a limited 60-unit edition called “Chromatic Moments.” These cars will be available in satin-finished French Ultramarine or London Red, giving the special edition a more distinctive appearance.

‍

‍

The interior continues the break from Jaguar's traditional approach. The Type 01 uses a four-door 2+2 configuration, meaning the cabin is designed around two main front occupants with two additional rear seats.

‍

A central spine runs through the cabin and serves multiple purposes. It incorporates storage areas and cup holders while also housing rear-seat climate vents and an additional screen for passengers sitting in the back.

‍

The driver sits behind a large 24-inch instrument display positioned behind an oval-shaped steering wheel. Rather than relying on a conventional collection of physical controls, Jaguar has built much of the cabin's functionality around digital interfaces.

‍

A 7-inch central touchscreen gives the front occupants control over functions including temperature, interior lighting and the dimming of the vehicle's glass roof.

‍

The audio system is also integrated into the interior design. A large soundbar stretches across the base of the windshield and contains 13 of the car's 25 speakers, creating a prominent visual feature while providing the main source of the vehicle's cabin audio system.

‍

Jaguar is offering customers a choice between traditional leather made from cowhide and a vegan alternative. Both options are combined with substantial textile sections around the seats, adding another layer of customization to the interior.

‍

Underneath the dramatic styling is Jaguar's new Electrical Architecture, known as JEA. The dedicated platform was developed specifically for the company's electric vehicles and is separate from the architecture used by Land Rover.

‍

‍

The JEA platform is expected to support two additional Jaguar electric vehicles in the future, meaning the Type 01 is not intended to be a standalone experiment. Instead, it serves as the first major example of a wider electric vehicle strategy for the brand.

‍

Performance is one of the Type 01's biggest selling points. The sedan uses three electric motors that collectively produce 1,015 horsepower and 1,007 pound-feet of torque.

‍

That output gives the heavy luxury sedan sports-car levels of acceleration. Jaguar says the Type 01 can reach 60 mph from a standstill in the three-second range, while accelerating from 62 mph to 112 mph takes exactly four seconds.

‍

Power comes from a 120-kWh battery using prismatic cells and nickel-heavy NMC chemistry. Despite the vehicle's large size and substantial weight, Jaguar is targeting an EPA-estimated driving range of more than 400 miles.

‍

The battery operates on an 850-volt electrical system, allowing the Type 01 to take advantage of high-power charging infrastructure. Jaguar says the vehicle can recover as much as 200 miles of range in approximately 13 minutes under the right charging conditions.

‍

One of the more unusual elements of the charging system is its ability to divide the battery into two 400-volt sections. The system is designed to make better use of 250-kW fast chargers and reduce the amount of time drivers need to spend connected to a charging station.

‍

North American models will feature a NACS charging port on the right side of the vehicle, giving owners access to the growing fast-charging network built around the connector. A separate SAE J1772 connection is located on the left side for other charging situations.

‍

‍

Both connections can support AC charging at up to 22 kW, providing flexibility depending on the available charging equipment.

‍

The Type 01 is already available for pre-order, although customers will have to wait considerably longer before taking delivery. Jaguar currently expects the first vehicles to reach customers around or before the middle of 2027.

‍

That timeline means the Type 01 is entering a luxury EV market that has changed significantly since Jaguar first introduced its concept. Buyers now have access to increasingly powerful electric sedans and SUVs from established luxury manufacturers as well as newer EV companies.

‍

Jaguar is therefore relying heavily on the Type 01's combination of design, performance, technology and exclusivity to distinguish it from those competitors.

‍

The car's unusual proportions, camera-based rear visibility system, three-motor powertrain and dedicated electric architecture all point toward the same goal: creating a Jaguar that feels fundamentally different from the company's previous generation of vehicles.

‍

With a starting price of about $130,500, more than 1,000 horsepower and a targeted range exceeding 400 miles, the Type 01 is positioned as both a flagship product and a statement about where Jaguar wants to go next.

‍

If the production model delivers on its performance and range targets, it could become the vehicle that defines Jaguar's transition from its traditional luxury-car identity into a new era centered almost entirely around electric performance and technology.
