Grand Theft Auto VI could be followed by its online multiplayer experience in 2027, according to a new comment from Twitch CEO Dan Clancy.
The suggestion came while Clancy was discussing the impact GTA VI could have on Twitch and the massive amount of gaming content expected to be created around Rockstar Games’ upcoming blockbuster. Although Rockstar has not announced a release date for the multiplayer component, Clancy appeared to indicate that it could arrive sometime next year.
Speaking with Bloomberg, Clancy explained that GTA VI itself is expected to create a major increase in activity on Twitch when it launches. However, he suggested that an even larger wave of viewers could come later when the multiplayer portion becomes available.
“You are going to see this big bump with GTA VI, but then an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer,” he said.
If Clancy was referring to the year following GTA VI’s launch, his comment would place the online mode sometime in 2027.
GTA VI is currently scheduled to launch on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. That means players will first experience the main game before any potential 2027 multiplayer release.
However, Clancy’s comment should not be treated as an official confirmation. Rockstar Games has not publicly announced a specific release window for GTA VI Online, and the company has not followed his remarks with its own confirmation.
The timing is particularly interesting because Rockstar has handled online modes differently across its major releases. Grand Theft Auto V received GTA Online only a few weeks after the main game launched, giving players relatively little time to wait before moving into the multiplayer experience.
Red Dead Redemption 2 took a very different approach. Its online mode arrived around seven months after the main game, showing that Rockstar is willing to leave a much longer gap between a major release and its multiplayer component.
That makes it difficult to determine exactly what will happen with GTA VI. Rockstar could potentially launch the online experience relatively soon after the main game, or it could take considerably longer to prepare the service.
GTA VI is also expected to be much more ambitious than previous entries in the series. Rockstar has spent years developing the game, and expectations surrounding its world, characters, gameplay systems and online potential are extremely high.
The multiplayer component could therefore require significant additional testing and development before Rockstar is ready to release it to millions of players.
Clancy’s comments are nevertheless notable because Twitch has a direct interest in the game's release. GTA Online has historically been a major source of livestreaming and gaming content, with creators using the open-world environment for role-playing, challenges, collaborations and other forms of entertainment.
A new GTA online experience could create another huge wave of content on Twitch and other streaming platforms. Creators would have a new version of Los Santos and its surrounding world to explore, while viewers could follow new characters, communities and stories created inside the game.
Clancy also said he has spent significant time speaking with Rockstar about how the platform can work with creators around GTA VI. That makes his comments particularly interesting, although it still does not establish that Rockstar has authorized him to reveal the multiplayer release window.
There is also the possibility that Clancy was referring to information shared during those discussions rather than a finalized public release plan. Development schedules can change, particularly for a game as large as GTA VI.
For now, Rockstar's confirmed focus remains the November 19 launch of GTA VI. The game is being released first on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, with further details about its broader release plans expected from Rockstar.
The game will also launch alongside its physical soundtrack releases, with vinyl and CD editions scheduled for the same day.
The potential 2027 multiplayer window therefore remains an unofficial hint rather than a confirmed release date. Until Rockstar announces its plans, players should not assume that GTA VI Online will definitely arrive in 2027.
If Clancy's statement does reflect Rockstar's current plans, however, it could mean players may not have to wait nearly as long for the next generation of GTA's online experience as some had expected.
For now, the November 19 launch is the date Rockstar has officially put on the calendar. Everything beyond the main game's release, including the timing of its multiplayer experience, remains subject to an announcement directly from Rockstar Games.
