The Recording Academy has announced major changes to the Grammy Awards lineup, introducing five new categories ahead of the 2027 ceremony, including a new award for Best Asian Pop Music Performance.
Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, explained that the updates are designed to give “more opportunities to celebrate different and new genres.” The changes will take effect for the upcoming eligibility cycle, with the 69th Grammy Awards scheduled for February 7 next year and nominations expected in November.
Best Asian Pop Music Performance
This new category will honor outstanding performances in Asian pop music that originate from, or are widely recognized within, Asian markets. It includes genres such as K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop, as long as the work features meaningful use of one or more Asian languages. The award will go directly to the performing artists behind the nominated songs.
Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance
This category highlights excellence in modern R&B performed by groups or collaborations. It includes duos, established groups, and joint performances between solo artists. At the same time, the existing Best R&B Performance category has been renamed Best R&B Solo Performance to separate solo work from collaborations more clearly.
Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance
The Recording Academy defines this category as recognizing songs that follow a traditional pop style that does not blend easily with modern pop trends. It focuses on vocal-driven performances that reflect classic pop arrangements and presentation rather than contemporary pop production styles.
Best Traditional Folk Album
This award focuses on albums rooted in traditional folk music. It can be awarded to performers as well as producers, engineers, and songwriters depending on their role. The Academy has also renamed the existing Best Folk Album category to Best Contemporary Folk Album, separating modern folk interpretations from traditional recordings.
Best Latin Song
This category is dedicated to songwriters. Eligible songs must be newly written and predominantly in Spanish, with at least 51 percent of the lyrics in Spanish. The award highlights songwriting excellence within Latin music and places emphasis on lyrical composition rather than performance alone.
These additions reflect the Grammys’ ongoing effort to evolve with global music trends and recognize a wider range of artistic expression across different cultures and genres.
