Google is making Android app development far more accessible with a major new update announced during Google I/O 2026. The company revealed that its web-based Google AI Studio can now create Android apps using AI, turning a process that usually takes weeks into something that can be done in minutes.
The new feature allows users to build apps simply by describing what they want. Google says the tool is designed for everyone, from experienced developers testing ideas quickly to complete beginners with no technical background. The AI handles much of the coding automatically, helping users create working Android apps directly from their browser.
Apps created through AI Studio are built using Kotlin, Android’s official programming language, along with Google’s Jetpack Compose toolkit. The platform also supports device features such as GPS, Bluetooth, and NFC, allowing users to build more advanced experiences instead of only simple apps.
Google explained that the tool can be used to create personal utilities, lightweight social apps, AI-powered experiences, and hardware-connected applications. For now, the apps are mainly intended for personal use and testing, though broader sharing features are planned for the future.
Users can preview their app instantly through an Android Emulator built directly into the browser. They can also install the app onto their Android phone using a USB connection and Android Debug Bridge support. This allows creators to test and improve their projects in real time without needing complicated setup processes.
For developers who want to continue building their projects professionally, Google AI Studio can automatically prepare app bundles, create Play Console records, and upload apps to internal testing tracks. Projects can also be exported directly into Android Studio or GitHub for further development.
Google says future updates will include support for Firebase services like authentication, databases, and app security tools. The company also plans to eventually allow users to publish apps privately for friends and family directly through the ecosystem.
Alongside the app-building tools, Google also introduced new AI-powered app discovery features. A new “Ask Play” experience inside the Play Store will let users search for apps through natural conversations with AI instead of traditional keyword searches.
Apps will also begin appearing directly inside conversations with Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, helping developers reach millions of users through AI-powered recommendations across Android and the web.
The announcement highlights Google’s growing focus on making AI useful in everyday tasks. Instead of requiring advanced coding knowledge, the company is positioning AI as a tool that can help almost anyone turn ideas into working software quickly and easily.
