Sony closed its June 2026 State of Play presentation with a major reveal for the next entry in the God of War series. Developed by Santa Monica Studio, God of War: Laufey takes a bold new direction by moving the spotlight away from Kratos and placing it on his wife, Laufey, also known as Faye. The game blends the fast-paced combat style of earlier entries with the deeper storytelling and mythological world-building introduced in the Norse saga.
The story begins after Faye’s death. She awakens after her own funeral and discovers that her carefully laid plans to protect Kratos and Atreus are now at risk. Instead of resting peacefully, she is pulled into a mysterious afterlife realm known as the “Everywhen,” a strange dimension where magic originates and gods from different mythologies compete for power. Along the way, she encounters powerful figures from various mythologies, including dangerous deities like Sekhmet and Begtse.
Gameplay focuses heavily on Faye’s abilities as a powerful Jötnar warrior. Known as the Golden Hand of the Jötnar, she can manipulate souls and use magic drawn from the world around her. This allows her to break enemies apart spiritually, opening up new combat combinations and strategies. Movement and fighting are designed to feel faster and more fluid, with seamless transitions between ground attacks and aerial combat. Instead of Kratos’ Leviathan Axe, Faye uses a new legendary sword built for aggressive, high-speed combat.
Faye is not alone in this journey. Actress Deborah Ann Woll returns to voice her character, joined by new allies including Phranque, a mysterious cosmic being portrayed by Jack Quaid, and Rue, an enchanted guardian linked to her weapon, voiced by Perlina Lau. These companions help her navigate the dangers of the Everywhen and uncover the truth behind her resurrection.
While no official release date has been announced yet, God of War: Laufey is already available to wishlist on PlayStation 5, building anticipation for one of the franchise’s most unexpected shifts in perspective.
