Casio's G-Shock has unveiled its new MRG-D5000 Blue Sapphire, an ultra-exclusive timepiece that becomes the most expensive production watch in the brand's history.

Priced at $80,000 USD, or approximately £67,000 GBP, the watch takes G-Shock's signature shock-resistant design into a much more luxurious and technically demanding category.
The MRG-D5000 is the result of an idea that dates back to 2017, when G-Shock creator Kikuo Ibe envisioned creating an extremely high-end version of the brand's iconic square watch.
That concept has now been turned into a production model, although in extremely limited numbers.
Only 20 examples of the MRG-D5000 Blue Sapphire will be produced worldwide, making the watch considerably rarer than G-Shock's regular collections.

The most distinctive part of the watch is its use of lab-grown blue sapphire crystal throughout the outer case and bezel.
Sapphire crystal is highly scratch-resistant, but using the material extensively in a shock-resistant watch creates a significant engineering challenge.
The watch measures 16.45mm thick, with the additional thickness helping accommodate the construction requirements of the sapphire components.
Instead of depending on conventional screws or drilled sections that could create weak points in the sapphire, G-Shock developed a completely different assembly method.
The company drew inspiration from traditional Japanese timber construction, particularly the way wooden structures can be connected through carefully designed interlocking joints.
That approach has been adapted into a three-dimensional framework for the watch.

Individual sapphire components fit together like pieces of a puzzle, creating an interlocking structure designed to absorb and distribute impact throughout the case.
The construction is intended to protect the delicate sapphire components while preserving the durability that has defined the G-Shock name for more than four decades.
Despite the luxury materials and complex construction, the MRG-D5000 retains key characteristics expected from a G-Shock.

The watch is water-resistant to 200 meters and features solar-powered functionality, allowing it to maintain the practical features associated with the brand.
Its overall shape also remains closely connected to G-Shock's history.
The MRG-D5000 follows the familiar square silhouette introduced with the original G-Shock in 1983, giving the modern luxury model a direct visual connection to the watch that started the brand's story.
The face adds another layer of luxury to the design.
It features a blue vapor-deposition finish with a brick-pattern texture inspired by the construction of the original G-Shock design.
The dial is then highlighted with 24-carat gold lettering, creating a sharp contrast against the deep blue appearance of the sapphire construction.
The combination of sapphire, gold and titanium gives the watch a very different character from conventional G-Shock models while maintaining the recognizable square profile.
The attention to detail continues on the back of the watch.

The caseback is made from Grade 5 titanium and incorporates sapphire crystal, adding another premium material to the construction.
It is engraved with the words "DREAM PROJECT," referencing the concept that inspired the creation of the watch.
Each piece also carries its individual number from 1/20 through 20/20, identifying its place within the extremely limited production run.
The production process is just as exclusive as the materials used to make the watch.
Every MRG-D5000 Blue Sapphire will be hand-assembled by a single senior technician at Casio's Yamagata facility in Japan.
Having one experienced technician responsible for each individual watch highlights the amount of manual work involved in assembling the complex sapphire structure.

The limited production also turns the MRG-D5000 into more than a technical showcase for G-Shock.
With only 20 watches available globally, the model is positioned as a collector-focused piece designed to demonstrate how far the brand can push its familiar design language.
The $80,000 price tag places the MRG-D5000 far above the majority of G-Shock watches and firmly into the luxury watch category.
At the same time, its square shape, 200-meter water resistance, solar-powered system and shock-resistant construction keep it connected to the practical identity that has defined G-Shock since 1983.
The MRG-D5000 Blue Sapphire is therefore a combination of G-Shock's original design heritage and an extensive experiment in high-end materials and construction.

The watch will be available in a worldwide production run of just 20 pieces through G-Shock, with each example individually numbered from 1/20 to 20/20.
At $80,000 per watch, the MRG-D5000 Blue Sapphire officially becomes the most expensive production G-Shock ever created.
