HBO is officially taking the Game of Thrones franchise to theaters for the first time, with Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest scheduled to arrive on June 6, 2029.
The upcoming film will expand the story of Westeros beyond television and explore one of the most important events in the history of the Targaryen dynasty.
Aegon’s Conquest takes place centuries before the events of the original Game of Thrones series. The story will follow Aegon I Targaryen as he begins his campaign to bring the divided kingdoms of Westeros under his rule.
Aegon, along with his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys, used their dragons and military forces to conquer much of the continent. His campaign ultimately established the Targaryen dynasty as the ruling family of Westeros.
The conquest is particularly important to the franchise's history because it laid the foundation for the political system and royal dynasty that remained at the center of the Game of Thrones story for generations.
Unlike the original series, which focused on the final years of the Targaryen dynasty's rule and the battle for the Iron Throne, the new movie will travel much further back in time to show how that dynasty began.
The film will be directed by Owen Harris, who is already familiar with the Westeros universe. Harris directed episodes of House of the Dragon and is also attached to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
Beau Willimon will write the screenplay. Willimon is known for his work on House of Cards and Andor, bringing experience from both political drama and science-fiction storytelling to the new project.
HBO has not yet announced who will play Aegon I Targaryen. Casting details for the central characters are expected to emerge as production moves closer.
The June 6, 2029 release date also gives the studio a clear theatrical window for the project, signaling that HBO is positioning Aegon’s Conquest as a major cinematic expansion of the franchise rather than another television spinoff.
The movie will give audiences an opportunity to see Westeros on a much larger scale, particularly during a period when dragons played a major role in warfare and the Targaryens were establishing their power.
Aegon's conquest also offers the franchise a different kind of story. Rather than focusing on an established royal family fighting to retain control, the film will follow the campaign that created the Targaryen monarchy in the first place.
The story could also explore the early relationship between Aegon and his sister-wives, the role of their dragons and the resistance they faced from the rulers who controlled Westeros before the Targaryen takeover.
The theatrical project arrives as HBO continues to expand the Game of Thrones universe across multiple productions.
House of the Dragon, the prequel series centered on the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, is moving forward with a fourth season.
At the same time, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been renewed for a second season. That series is set roughly a century before the original Game of Thrones and follows Ser Duncan the Tall and his young companion, Egg, who later becomes King Aegon V Targaryen.
With Aegon’s Conquest, HBO is now developing stories that span several different periods of Westerosi history.
The original Game of Thrones ran for eight seasons from 2011 to 2019 and became one of HBO's biggest television franchises. Its ending left the fictional world open to further exploration through stories set before and around the events of the main series.
Aegon’s Conquest represents a particularly significant opportunity because the central historical event was repeatedly referenced throughout the original series and House of the Dragon but has never previously been depicted as the main story of a feature film.
The movie could also provide a new introduction to the Targaryen dynasty for audiences who may know the family primarily through House of the Dragon and Daenerys Targaryen's storyline in Game of Thrones.
For longtime fans, the project will revisit familiar elements such as dragons, royal succession, warfare and the struggle for control of Westeros, while introducing a much earlier chapter of the franchise's history.
HBO has not yet revealed additional details about the film's full cast, production schedule or other major characters.
What is confirmed is that the first Game of Thrones feature film will arrive in theaters in 2029, with Owen Harris directing and Beau Willimon writing the screenplay.
Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest is scheduled to premiere exclusively in theaters on June 6, 2029.
