Chinese carmaker BYD is continuing its rapid rise in the global auto industry, posting major sales wins across several countries in 2026.

In the UK, new vehicle registration data showed BYD sold 26,396 vehicles during the first four months of the year. That was more than double the 12,570 vehicles sold by Tesla during the same period.

The UK’s growing interest in electric vehicles helped fuel BYD’s expansion, with battery-electric vehicle adoption increasing by 22.1% so far this year. As more consumers switch to EVs, BYD has quickly become one of the fastest-growing brands in the market.

The company also achieved a major milestone in Brazil. In April, BYD sold 14,911 vehicles, slightly beating Volkswagen to become the country’s top-selling automotive brand for the month. The achievement is especially significant because Volkswagen has been producing vehicles in Brazil since the 1950s.

Much of BYD’s success in Brazil has come from its affordable Dolphin Mini electric car, which is known as the Dolphin Surf in Europe. The model has become one of the country’s most popular and cheapest EV options.

Following its strong performance, BYD has now raised its 2026 sales target in Brazil to 250,000 vehicles.

The company is also growing quickly in Australia, where electric vehicle adoption reached a record 17% market share in April despite an overall slowdown in traditional car sales.

BYD’s Sealion 7 electric SUV led sales in the country with 1,780 deliveries during the month. The company also placed four different models in Australia’s top ten EV rankings, including the Atto 2 and Atto 3.

To support its growing EV business worldwide, BYD is also preparing to expand its next-generation ultra-fast Flash Charging network into more international markets.
